Meaning
High durability electrical conductors utilize compacted ceramic powder to insulate copper wires from metal sheaths. In polymer processing machines, mineral insulated cable is used to connect heater bands and internal thermocouple sensors within hot runner manifolds. This construction prevents electrical shorts in environments that experience both high temperatures and physical vibration.
Thermal Durability
Magnesium oxide powder provides excellent electrical insulation while conducting heat efficiently to the outer sheath. Because the polymer melt requires processing temperatures up to four hundred degrees celsius, a mineral insulated cable can withstand these conditions without the degradation that organic insulation would experience. This continuous service capability ensures that temperature readings remain stable over long production campaigns.
The dense ceramic packing prevents any moisture ingress, which is a common cause of failure in standard cables exposed to ambient humidity during mould storage.
Physical Resistance
The solid metal outer sheath protects the internal conductor wires from mechanical damage and polymer leakage. If molten plastic escapes the runner manifold, the mineral insulated cable prevents the material from compromising the electrical connection. This sealed barrier also protects the wires from being pinched or sheared during tool assembly.
Sensor Accuracy
Constant electrical resistance within the insulated conductors prevents temperature measurement errors. Because the mineral insulation remains stable at elevated temperatures, the sensor signal does not suffer from leakage currents. This signal integrity enables the machine controller to maintain the melt temperature within the specified tolerance band.
