Meaning
The linear distance between adjacent mounting points secures a mould base to the platens of an injection moulding machine. Clamp strap pitch determines the distribution of holding force across the perimeter of the tool. Proper spacing ensures that the mould remains closed against the high internal pressure generated during the injection phase of the cycle.
Misalignment between the platen hole pattern and the strap positions can lead to uneven clamping and flash on the moulded parts.
Force Distribution
Consistent pressure across the parting line prevents the mould halves from shifting or bowing. When the strap positions are too far apart, the center of the mould base may experience slight deflection. This deflection results in dimensional instability in the final plastic components.
Engineers calculate the required pitch based on the total clamping tonnage and the stiffness of the mould plates.
Tooling Interface
Standardized hole patterns on machine platens often dictate the available positions for clamping hardware. Selecting a pitch that aligns with these pre-drilled holes simplifies the setup process and reduces the time needed for mould changes. Custom spacers or adapter plates are required when the tool dimensions do not match the machine layout.
Mechanical Integrity
Heavy moulds require strong straps and bolts to resist the gravitational pull and the dynamic forces of the machine cycle. Periodic inspection of the clamping hardware identifies stretched bolts or worn threads that could compromise the setup. A secure mounting arrangement protects both the operator and the expensive tooling from accidental displacement during high-speed operation.
