Meaning
Reinforced thermoplastic polymers incorporate glass fibers into a polyamide matrix to maximize strength, stiffness, and heat deflection temperature. PA6-GF30 is a polyamide 6 composite containing thirty percent glass fibers by weight, known for its high impact strength and excellent flow properties during molding. This material is commonly used to produce structural automotive components and heavy-duty industrial housings.
Composite Chemistry
The polyamide 6 base resin absorbs moisture from the environment, which acts as a plasticizer and increases impact toughness while reducing stiffness. Glass fiber reinforcement offsets this loss of stiffness, providing a balance of properties.
Mechanical Performance
At thirty percent glass fiber loading, the composite exhibits exceptional rigidity and tensile strength compared to the unfilled resin. This high strength allows it to replace metal die-cast parts in power tool housings and engine covers. However, the mechanical performance of the molded part is highly dependent on the orientation of the glass fibers, which align along the polymer flow lines during mold filling.
Molding Parameter
The high viscosity of the glass-filled melt requires high injection speeds and high mold temperatures to achieve a smooth surface finish. Standard tooling for this abrasive composite must be constructed from hardened steel to prevent premature erosion of the gates and cavity walls. In addition, proper drying of the polyamide resin before molding is essential to prevent hydrolytic degradation, which would otherwise ruin the mechanical strength and surface quality of the finished parts.
