Meaning
Chromium-alloyed stainless steel designed for plastic injection moulds. High corrosion resistance is the primary attribute of 1.2083 steel when processing chemically aggressive polymers like PVC or acetals. This grade typically contains thirteen percent chromium and provides excellent polishability for optical parts.
It prevents the formation of rust in cooling channels that leads to thermal instability.
Corrosion Resistance
Protection against acidic byproducts characterizes this material choice during long production cycles. While standard tool steels succumb to the hydrochloric acid released during PVC processing, 1.2083 steel maintains surface integrity without frequent refinishing. This chemical stability ensures that the cavity finish remains consistent across millions of cycles.
Water quality in the cooling circuit often varies, yet the alloy resists pitting that would otherwise impede heat transfer.
Hardening Response
Thermal treatment protocols determine the final hardness and wear resistance of the insert. Through-hardening 1.2083 steel to fifty-two HRC allows the block to withstand high injection pressures without deformation. Quenching must be controlled to avoid internal stresses that might cause cracking in complex geometries.
The resulting microstructure provides the necessary support for high-polish surfaces.
Surface Finish
Achieving a mirror finish requires specific grinding and polishing techniques tailored to the high chrome content. The grade 1.2083 steel accepts a high degree of luster suitable for lens production or transparent housings.
