Meaning
High-speed injection moulding processes produce lightweight plastic containers with wall thicknesses of less than one millimeter. This application category, known as thin wall packaging, requires thermoplastic resins with extremely high melt flow rates to ensure complete cavity filling. Moulders typically utilize controlled rheology resins to achieve the necessary flow properties for these parts.
Flow Requirement
Low melt viscosity is required to overcome the extreme injection pressures and shear rates encountered during the moulding cycle. Polypropylene resins with narrow molecular weight distributions flow easily through the narrow flow channels.
Moulding Design
Tooling for thin wall packaging requires specialized construction to withstand the high clamp forces and injection pressures. High-strength steel and intensive cooling lines are integrated into the mould to maintain part dimensions and achieve fast cycle times. If the flow rate of the polymer drifts, parts may exhibit short shots or severe flash.
Processors utilize high-flow controlled rheology polypropylene to minimize these molding defects and ensure a wider processing window.
Economic Benefit
Faster cycle times and reduced material usage represent the primary drivers of cost savings in these high-volume operations. Shaving a fraction of a second off the cooling time significantly increases daily production yields. Low part weight directly reduces shipping costs and resin consumption.
