Meaning
Material density metrics measure the ratio of a polymer’s mass to the mass of an equal volume of water at a specified temperature. The polyethylene specific gravity is a fundamental property that dictates the stiffness, yield strength, and barrier properties of the resin. This value is used by moulders to identify different polymer types.
Crystallinity Relationship
Linear polymer chains pack more tightly, resulting in higher density. A higher polyethylene specific gravity corresponds to higher crystallinity in the polymer structure. This crystalline structure increases the stiffness and tensile strength of the material but reduces its impact resistance.
By measuring this value, a compounder can estimate the mechanical performance of the resin before it is molded.
Processing Influence
Melt temperatures and cooling times must be adjusted based on the resin’s density. The polyethylene specific gravity determines the cooling rate required to achieve the desired properties during molding. A high density resin cools slower than a low density resin because of the heat released during crystallization.
Moulders must extend the cycle times to prevent warp in high density parts.
Quality Verification
Resin suppliers must certify this value to ensure consistency across batches. If the measured polyethylene specific gravity deviates from the product datasheet, it indicates that the resin formulation or processing conditions have drifted. This drift can cause parts to fail during use due to low impact strength or excessive shrinkage.
Verifying this metric prevents defective parts from reaching the market and maintains product quality.
