Meaning
Sensing device that utilizes the piezoelectric effect to convert mechanical pressure within a mold cavity into a measurable electrical signal. A piezoelectric pressure sensor provides real-time data on the packing and holding phases of the injection molding cycle. This instrument is typically installed behind an ejector pin or flush with the cavity wall to monitor the melt directly.
Signal Generation
Mechanical stress on the quartz crystal inside the unit generates an electric charge proportional to the applied force. This piezoelectric pressure sensor sends the signal to a charge amplifier before it reaches the machine controller. Rapid response times allow the system to detect pressure spikes that occur in milliseconds.
Data from the sensor is used to switch the machine from injection to holding pressure. This precise control over the switch-over point prevents over-packing and reduces the variation in part weight. It is the most effective way to manage the impact of batch-to-batch material inconsistency.
Quality Monitoring
Quality assurance systems rely on these measurements to identify defective parts during the cycle. If the peak pressure measured by the piezoelectric pressure sensor falls outside a predefined window, the part is automatically diverted to a scrap bin. This capability reduces the need for manual inspection.
Monitoring the pressure curve also helps in identifying viscosity shifts in the raw material.
Hardware Installation
Placement of the unit must be carefully planned to avoid interference with the cooling channels or the ejection system. Because a piezoelectric pressure sensor is sensitive to temperature, it often requires thermal isolation or compensation. Regular calibration is necessary to ensure the accuracy of the readings over millions of cycles.
Durable housing protects the delicate electronics from the harsh environment of the molding shop.
