Meaning
Precision shallow channels machined into mold land surfaces allow trapped cavity air and volatile gases to escape during rapid plastic injection. Standard parting line vent depth ranges from ten to fifty micrometers depending on polymer viscosity and crystalline structure. The relief channel transitions to a deeper drop-off groove to vent gases to atmosphere without allowing resin to leak past the land.
Tool drawings define these dimensions, which resin datasheets do not mention despite their direct impact on filling speed and part cosmetic defects. Inadequate vent depth causes diesel burning, short shots, and high cavity backpressure.
Gas Evacuation
Displaced air ahead of advancing polymer melt must escape rapidly to prevent compressive heating inside the mold cavity. Shallow vent channels provide low resistance air exit paths while offering high flow resistance to viscous polymer melts.
Flash Prevention
Vent depths tailored to resin viscosity prevent liquid polymer from penetrating the parting line gap under peak injection pressures. Amorphous resins with high melt viscosity tolerate deeper vents than low viscosity crystalline materials like nylon.
Maintenance Cleaning
Additive outgassing and polymer volatiles deposit burnt residues inside narrow vent channels over extended production runs. Clogged vents restrict gas release, requiring periodic manual bench cleaning with solvent to restore original venting depth.
