Meaning
Sturdy steel plates bolted across the parting line of an injection mould secure the core and cavity halves together during transport and handling. The application of a parting line transport strap prevents the tool from accidentally opening while it is being lifted or moved by a crane. This hardware is a mandatory safety item for all heavy production tooling.
Structural Design
Fabricated from thick steel, the strap must be strong enough to withstand the weight of the heavier half of the mould if the tool starts to separate. The parting line transport strap is painted in a bright warning color, such as safety red or yellow, to make its presence obvious to the setup technician. It is bolted directly into pre drilled holes on both the stationary and moving plates of the mould.
Operational Safety
Safety during mould installation is greatly improved because the tool cannot open unexpectedly while being suspended from a crane. If a parting line transport strap were missing, the two halves of the mould could slide apart, causing severe injury to personnel and catastrophic damage to the precision core and cavity inserts. Thus, using these straps is a fundamental safety procedure in moulding facilities.
Maintenance Rule
Before starting the machine cycle, the setup technician must remove the strap to allow the mould to open and close during production. The removed parting line transport strap is typically bolted to the top of the machine or stored in a designated area so that it can be reattached when the tool is removed from the press. Regular inspection of the mounting bolts and threads ensures that the straps remain secure and reliable, preventing accidents during subsequent mould changeovers when the tool must be lifted and transported back to the storage rack.
