Meaning
Polymeric additive that enhances impact strength and fracture resistance in rigid plastics by dispersing rubbery domains within the polymer matrix. Injection moulders and resin compounders add these modifiers to brittle materials like polypropylene to prevent part failure during assembly or use. This material modifies the mechanical properties of the final product.
Impact Improvement
The modifier works by absorbing and dissipating mechanical energy when the moulded part is subjected to an impact. These rubbery domains act as stress concentrators that trigger microvoiding and shear yielding, which stops cracks from propagating through the rigid matrix. Adding an elastomer toughener is particularly helpful for parts that operate in low-temperature environments where polymers become brittle.
Matrix Dispersion
Achieving high impact performance requires a fine and uniform dispersion of the modifier within the polymer melt. If the compounder fails to achieve the correct shear during compounding, the rubber domains will coalesce into large pockets, reducing the toughness of the part. Processing parameters like screw design and melt temperature must be closely monitored to ensure the additive dispersion is correct.
Sourcing Balance
Sourcing departments must balance the cost and performance of these additives when formulating high-impact compounds. While virgin elastomer modifiers increase the raw material cost, they provide consistent property retention compared to cheaper recycled rubber sources. Using recycled materials can introduce contaminants that reduce the elongation at break of the final part.
Moulders must calculate this cost-performance trade-off based on the performance specification of the component.
