Meaning
Non-return assemblies situated at the tip of an injection screw regulate the direction of resin flow during the moulding cycle. These check valves allow the melt to pass forward during plasticization but close immediately when the screw moves forward to pack the cavity. Effective sealing ensures that the full volume of the shot enters the tool rather than leaking back into the screw flights.
Backflow Prevention
Consistency in shot weight relies on the rapid and repeatable closure of the internal ring or ball. When check valves fail to seat properly, the pressure profile drops and the part may suffer from short shots or dimensional instability. This mechanical action occurs within milliseconds of the injection stroke commencement.
Component Wear
Abrasive resins or corrosive additives accelerate the degradation of the sealing surfaces within the assembly. Periodic inspection of check valves reveals pitting or thinning of the check ring which leads to increased process variation. Maintenance schedules often include the replacement of these parts to maintain tight tolerance control.
Melt Stability
Pressure remains constant across the stroke when the seal is maintained. If the check valves allow even a small percentage of slippage, the effective intensification ratio changes and the physical properties of the moulded part fluctuate. High-quality tool steel construction extends the service life of these injection components.
