Meaning
Barrier effectiveness in polymer packaging depends on the physical opposition to mass transfer across the interface between the plastic surface and the surrounding medium. This transport property is called boundary layer resistance, which determines the rate at which volatile compounds or gases migrate into or out of a moulded part. It represents the localized resistance of the stagnant fluid layer adjacent to the solid polymer surface.
Its influence diminishes as flow velocities or agitation in the surrounding fluid increase, leaving the internal polymer diffusion rate as the primary controller of overall mass transfer.
Migration Kinetics
Molecular diffusion through a solid polymer involves a slow progression that is often slower than transport through a liquid or gaseous boundary layer. When a migrant moves from a moulded container into a liquid food simulant, boundary layer resistance becomes a prominent factor under low agitation conditions. This barrier remains prominent in viscous food matrices, where convective flow is minimal.
Laboratory extraction protocols use high-speed stirring to minimize this fluid resistance, allowing accurate evaluation of the internal diffusion coefficient of the resin.
Process Influence
Extrusion variables and subsequent film cooling alter the localized surface topography and skin density of a polymer. These structural features affect the boundary layer resistance by altering the thickness of the stagnant fluid layer that forms against the part. A smooth, highly polished surface supports a more uniform boundary layer than a micro-textured or sandblasted surface.
The resultant transport dynamics dictate the loss rate of volatile aroma molecules from packaged liquids.
Testing Standardization
Standardized testing protocols eliminate external variables to isolate polymer properties. In migration testing, this is achieved by specifying the velocity of the liquid simulants. Consistent flow minimizes the fluid-side barrier.
This isolation ensures repeatable results across different laboratory setups.
