Meaning
Thermal compression localizes the fusion zone during injection moulding to erase visible knit lines where molten fronts join. Weld line knockdown relies on precise control of packing pressure and melt temperature to ensure polymer chains entangle across the interface before solidification. This mechanical mitigation hides cosmetic surface fractures while improving the impact resistance of the junction area.
Thermal Strategy
Engineers manipulate peak cavity pressure to force material across the interface while the plastic remains in a low viscosity state. Higher injection speeds increase the kinetic energy of the meeting fronts and reduce the cooling duration that prevents molecular blending. Moulders observe that excessive packing pressure results in flash at the parting line or creates internal stresses that cause premature part failure.
Material Performance
Virgin resin grades provide consistent rheological properties that allow for repeatable adjustments to the process temperature. Regrind material alters the effective viscosity and requires increased knockdown effort to achieve the same surface quality as pure feedstock. Data sheets specify the ideal processing window for a material but the actual settings on a production press adjust for specific tool geometry and cooling cycles.
Defect Mitigation
Improperly managed joint lines lead to a structural weakness known as a cold weld which acts as a stress riser under mechanical load. Poor interface bonding causes the final component to crack along the seam when exposed to chemical environments or environmental stress cracking agents. Reducing the visibility of this defect ensures that finished parts meet the aesthetic requirements of high gloss automotive or consumer electronic applications.
