Meaning
Structured validation protocols confirm that a newly manufactured injection mould operates reliably under production conditions. The process of tool qualification involves running a series of trial shots to establish the process window and verify that the moulded parts meet all dimensional specifications. This systematic testing must be completed before the tool is released for high-volume manufacturing.
Dimensional Analysis
Moulded parts from each cavity must be measured against the engineering drawings to ensure they are within the required tolerances. By analyzing the dimensions of parts from several different runs, the quality department can identify any cavity-to-cavity variation or shrinkage issues. This analysis is critical for multi-cavity tools used in precision assembly.
In addition, it helps to identify any tooling wear or mismatch between the core and cavity halves that could lead to flashing or part ejector marks.
Process Capability
Establishing a stable processing window is necessary to ensure the tool can produce good parts consistently over thousands of cycles. The qualification process includes testing the sensitivity of the parts to changes in melt temperature, injection speed, and pack pressure. This testing determines the capability index of the moulding process.
Production Release
Verification is complete when the tool has run continuously for a specified duration without producing defects or experiencing mechanical issues. Once the tool has passed all stages of qualification, the master process parameters are locked and the tool is approved for production. This final approval ensures that the moulding operation can run efficiently without frequent process adjustments.
