Meaning
Moulds and auxiliary hardware designed for thermoforming shape heated thermoplastic sheets into finished parts using vacuum or air pressure. Industrial thermoforming tooling includes the male or female mould cavity, the pressure box, and the assist plugs that push the sheet into deep recesses. These assemblies guide the distribution of the polymer sheet as it stretches against the mould contours.
The layout must incorporate venting channels to evacuate trapped air quickly.
Material Selection
The choice of material for the mould body depends on the expected production volume and the required surface finish. When producing prototypes, thermoforming tooling can be machined from polyurethane board or cast epoxy to minimize initial costs. For high-volume production, CNC-machined aluminum or cast aluminum is preferred due to its superior thermal conductivity.
This selection ensures rapid heat extraction and shorter cycle times. It also allows the mold to survive the mechanical stresses exerted by high-pressure air systems during thick-sheet thermoforming.
Cooling Integration
Internal cooling channels are critical for maintaining a stable mould surface temperature during continuous runs. In complex thermoforming tooling, these fluid passages must follow the contour of the mould to prevent localized hot spots. Consistent cooling prevents the polymer sheet from sticking and reduces the risk of post-mould warpage.
Thermal consistency ensures that every formed part maintains its dimensional tolerances.
Production Longevity
Surface wear and mechanical fatigue determine the operational lifespan of the forming components. In high-speed packaging applications, thermoforming tooling must withstand millions of cycles without losing detail or developing surface defects. Wear-resistant surface treatments or anodizing are applied to protect the aluminum substrate from the abrasive action of the polymer sheet.
This treatment maintains the cosmetic quality of the produced parts.
