Meaning
Deliberate spatial allowance engineered into mould assemblies accommodates differential dimensional expansion between heated tooling components and colder surrounding clamp frames. Thermal expansion clearance prevents hot runner manifolds, heated core inserts and high-temperature sliding elements from binding against cool cavity plates during steady-state production. Engineers calculate these gaps from component lengths, working temperature differentials and material thermal expansion coefficients.
The boundary stops where mechanical sliding contact must be maintained at operating temperature to seal against plastic pressure without leakage.
Expansion Physics
Metals expand proportionally to temperature rises according to their linear thermal expansion coefficients. A hot runner manifold fabricated from P20 tool steel expanding through a temperature delta of 200 degrees Celsius increases by roughly 2.4 millimetres per metre of length. Solid locating rings, manifold support pads and nozzle drops absorb this movement across engineered expansion gaps.
Uncompensated thermal growth transfers high mechanical forces into clamping frame bolting, causing platen deflection, misaligned guide bushings and cracked manifold nozzle tips.
Alignment Gaps
Slide components operating within heated core segments demand calculated clearance gaps to avoid high-temperature seizure. Interlocking tapers provide rigid lock-up during final clamp closure while opening wide thermal expansion clearance gaps during opening strokes. Cooling water manifolds installed through sliding cores maintain steady operating temperatures to preserve precise guiding clearances.
Disregarding thermal gradients between hot core pins and cold stripper rings causes premature tool wear and galling failures.
Mould Leakage
Excessive expansion gaps left between hot runner nozzle tips and cavity gate bushings allow molten polymer to escape into the manifold pocket. Melt accumulation inside hot runner housings cooks into a carbonised mass that crushes internal wiring and ruins heating components. Insufficient clearance crushes nozzle tip seats during tool warm-up, causing plastic injection pressures to blow past damaged seal faces.
Thermal expansion clearance preserves structural component integrity and melt seals across high-temperature injection moulding operations.
