Meaning
Sorbitol-based organic chemical compounds that are added to polypropylene to improve its optical transparency belong to the group of nucleating agents. In compounding processes, sorbitol clarifiers function by dissolving in the polymer melt and then recrystallizing at higher temperatures to form a highly dispersed network. This network provides a massive number of nucleation sites, which leads to a dramatic reduction in spherulite size.
Clarity Mechanism
The presence of large crystal structures in semi-crystalline polymers scatters light and results in a hazy appearance. When sorbitol clarifiers are introduced, they promote the rapid growth of a very fine crystalline structure that does not interfere with the transmission of visible light. This structural change reduces the haze value of polypropylene parts from over sixty percent to less than ten percent.
The resulting high clarity is necessary for applications like housewares or medical syringes where visual inspection of the contents is required.
Processing Conditions
The dispersion and performance of these additives depend heavily on the thermal history and shear experienced during the moulding cycle. When using sorbitol clarifiers, processors must maintain melt temperatures high enough to fully dissolve the additive in the resin. If the temperature is too low, undissolved particles will act as defects, which reduces both the clarity and the aesthetic quality of the part.
This temperature control must be balanced with the need to avoid thermal degradation of the polymer matrix itself.
Material Performance
In addition to improving the optical properties, these additives enhance the mechanical properties and processability of the resin. Polypropylene modified with sorbitol clarifiers exhibits a higher flexural modulus and a higher heat deflection temperature than the unmodified base resin. The higher crystallization temperature also allows for quicker demoulding, which reduces the injection moulding cycle time.
This productivity gain can offset the higher material cost of the clarified resin compared to standard grades.
