Meaning
Unintended chemical transformations occur when reactive species deviate from the primary polymerization pathway to produce unwanted molecular chains or chain branches. These side reactions alter the architecture of a polymer by introducing localized crosslinks, unsaturated bonds or molecular weight distribution shifts that differ from the targeted profile.
Processing Impact
Heat and pressure gradients during injection moulding provide the energy required to trigger such secondary pathways if specific thermal stabilizers fail or if moisture contamination introduces reactive hydroxyl groups. High shear rates force polymer chains into high energy configurations where chain scission or recombination dominates the local chemistry. Material degradation from these events shows up as yellowing in clear resins, premature embrittlement in the final part or a loss of impact resistance.
Moulders detect these shifts by monitoring the viscosity of the melt as excessive crosslinking causes a measurable pressure spike during injection.
Quality Specification
Virgin resin suppliers certify the molecular weight distribution and additive package to prevent instability under standard operating windows. Regrind introduces variability because previous processing cycles already depleted the stabilizers and potentially initialized oxidation. The distinction between a material specification and a part specification rests on the stability of the additive package against the thermal history of the machine.
Datasheet values represent a baseline measured on controlled laboratory samples rather than the properties a production part maintains after undergoing significant thermal stress.
Operational Penalty
Scrap rates increase when these secondary processes result in structural inconsistencies that disqualify components from service. Tooling maintenance becomes more frequent if the polymerization of byproducts deposits thin films or charred debris on the cavity surface. Costs mount as the necessity for higher purity feedstocks or reduced regrind ratios replaces less expensive, higher variability input streams.
Stable processing conditions minimize the kinetic energy available for unwanted molecular bonds to form.
