Meaning
Sensor mounted in the nozzle of the injection unit or directly inside the mold cavity measures the real-time pressure of the polymer melt during the molding cycle. This pressure transducer converts the mechanical force of the flowing plastic into an electrical signal, providing critical data on the filling, packing and holding phases. By tracking the pressure profile, the sensor allows the molding machine or process controller to monitor and adjust the cycle to maintain part consistency.
Sensor Location
Cavity-mounted sensors are typically placed behind ejector pins or directly in the cavity wall near the gate or at the last area to fill. Nozzle-mounted sensors measure the pressure before the polymer enters the mold, capturing the behavior of the injection unit. Placing the sensor directly in the cavity provides the most accurate feedback, as it reflects the actual conditions experienced by the molded part during solidification.
Melt Analysis
Real-time monitoring of the pressure curve helps detect process shifts, such as changes in material viscosity or nozzle blockages, before they result in defective parts. If the peak pressure or the pressure integral falls outside the established limits, the system can automatically segregate the suspect parts. This automated sorting reduces the risk of shipping defective components to the customer.
Process Optimization
Connecting the sensor to the machine controller enables closed-loop control, where the transition from injection to packing is triggered by a specific cavity pressure. This method compensates for batch-to-batch variations in resin viscosity or regrind content, ensuring uniform part weight and dimensions. The transducer is an essential tool for high-precision, automated molding operations.
