Meaning
Initial heating of polyester chips at moderate temperatures transforms the material from a glassy, amorphous state into a structured crystalline form. Effective pre crystallization prevents the pellets from sticking together when they are later exposed to heat.
Agglomeration Defense
Softening of the polymer surface occurs as the temperature rises toward the melting point. During pre crystallization, the molecules rearrange into a more stable lattice that is less prone to tackiness. If this step is bypassed, the resin will form large clumps in the dryer that block the flow of material.
Crystalline surfaces provide the physical barrier needed to maintain individual pellet integrity.
Thermal Stabilization
Energy absorption during the transition from amorphous to crystalline releases heat known as the heat of crystallization. Managing this energy within the pre crystallization stage prevents uncontrolled temperature spikes in the main reactor. Once the material is crystalline, it can withstand the extreme temperatures used in solid state polymerization without fusing.
This thermal stability is essential for achieving high molecular weights.
Agitation Method
Fluidized beds or stirred vessels keep the pellets in constant motion while they are heated. Within the pre crystallization equipment, mechanical force breaks any temporary bonds that form between the softening granules. High air velocity or rotating paddles ensure that heat is distributed evenly throughout the mass.
Continuous movement is the primary mechanism for ensuring a uniform degree of crystallinity across the entire batch.
