Meaning
Biodegradable aliphatic polyester synthesized from succinic acid and 1,4-butanediol offers a versatile solution for flexible and rigid applications. Polybutylene succinate provides a balance of toughness and thermal resistance that distinguishes it from other bio-based plastics. This resin is frequently used in mulch films and compostable bags.
Crystallization Behavior
High rates of solidification allow for faster cycle times in injection moulding and better bubble stability in film blowing. Polybutylene succinate has a melting point near 115 degrees Celsius, which is significantly higher than that of many other biodegradable resins. This thermal profile allows the material to be processed on standard equipment with minimal modifications.
Moulding Characteristic
Flow properties and shrinkage rates are similar to those of polyolefins like polyethylene or polypropylene. Polybutylene succinate exhibits good melt strength, which makes it suitable for extrusion coating and thermoforming. A moulder can often use existing tools designed for traditional plastics when transitioning to this sustainable material.
Application Scope
Versatility in blending allows the material to be combined with starch or other bio-polymers to tailor its properties. Polybutylene succinate is often used as a matrix for wood-plastic composites because of its compatibility with natural fibers. Its resistance to oils and greases makes it an effective barrier for food packaging.
The material decomposes into water and carbon dioxide in both soil and compost environments. This degradability makes it a preferred choice for agricultural applications where retrieving plastic film after the harvest is difficult.
