Meaning
Chromium-molybdenum alloy steel provides the base material for moderate-run injection moulds requiring consistent mechanical properties and weldability. P20 steel tooling occupies a market position between low-carbon mild steel and high-hardness through-hardened grades. The chemistry remains stable across large cross-sections to ensure uniform hardness throughout the finished mould block.
Manufacturers rely on this grade for housings and inserts where initial machining costs outweigh the requirement for extreme surface wear resistance.
Hardening Protocol
Pre-hardened conditions define the standard supply state for this alloy, typically ranging between thirty and thirty-six on the Rockwell C scale. Material providers deliver these blocks in a tempered state to remove the need for post-machining heat treatment of the finished cavity. Thermal stability during the electric discharge machining process allows for precise detail definition without introducing internal stress.
Surface nitriding or chrome plating later enhances wear resistance when high-volume production schedules demand extended cycle life from the cavity walls.
Thermal Load
Plastic melt temperature and clamping pressure dictate the structural performance of the mould during operation. P20 steel tooling shows sensitivity to excessive shear heat when the cooling channels remain improperly placed or blocked by debris. Engineers calculate the deflection of the mould base under peak injection pressure to prevent flash formation or parting line mismatch.
Consistent cooling flow prevents localized hot spots that soften the steel surface and lead to permanent deformation of the cavity geometry.
Economic Boundary
Virgin steel plate offers predictable structural integrity for complex core designs whereas regrind stocks risk hidden porosity that ruins expensive surface finishes. Toolmakers select the material grade based on the projected cycle count rather than the initial block price. Low-volume prototype moulds function reliably with cheaper materials until the wear threshold of the alloy falls below the tolerance limits of the part.
Higher hardness requirements for long-run production render this specific alloy suboptimal compared to stainless or powdered metal alternatives.
