Meaning
Manifold systems maintain polymer melt in a molten state as it flows from the injection molding machine nozzle to the mold cavities. Utilizing a hot runner prevents the plastic from solidifying within the distribution channels during each molding cycle. It governs the delivery of the material and reduces the generation of waste scrap.
This tooling design is unsuitable for materials that are highly heat-sensitive or prone to rapid thermal degradation.
Runner Design
Internal heaters or external heating bands keep the melt channel at the target processing temperature. In a hot runner system, the flow channels are designed to minimize pressure drop and prevent material stagnation. Balanced flow paths ensure that each cavity in a multi-cavity mold fills at the same rate and pressure.
Production Efficiency
Eliminating the cold runner removes the need to regrind and recycle the solidified distribution channels. Using a hot runner reduces the cycle time because molders do not have to wait for a thick runner to cool. This design reduces material costs and improves the efficiency of high-volume runs.
Temperature Control
Precise thermal management is needed to prevent drooling or premature freezing at the gate. Fluctuations in temperature can cause mold filling issues or part defects. Valve gates can be used to mechanically open and close the flow.
