Meaning
Dehumidification process that uses porous materials to remove moisture from resin pellets before processing. Effective desiccant hopper drying is required for hygroscopic materials like nylon or polycarbonate to prevent aesthetic and structural defects. The system circulates hot, dry air through the material bed to pull water molecules from the polymer.
Moisture Extraction
Dry air with a low dew point flows upward through the hopper to heat the pellets. During desiccant hopper drying, the water migrates from the center of each pellet to the surface where the air carries it away. Maintaining a dew point of -40 degrees ensures the air has the capacity to absorb moisture.
Desiccant Regeneration
Once the desiccant material becomes saturated, the system switches to a heating cycle to drive off the collected water. Continuous desiccant hopper drying relies on a dual-bed or wheel system to provide a constant supply of dry air. Failure to regenerate the desiccant leads to high moisture levels in the melt.
Material Quality
Improperly dried resin causes splay, bubbles and brittle parts. Using desiccant hopper drying prevents the hydrolysis that reduces the molecular weight of the polymer. This step is the first defense against part failure in high-load applications.
