Meaning
An analytical instrument determining absolute moisture mass through electrochemical reduction relies on Faradays law where every equivalent of water consumed corresponds to a fixed electrical charge passing through the system. A coulometric cell measures trace moisture down to parts per million levels within polymer pellet drying loops and barrier film extrusion lines. Water vapor transfers from the carrier gas stream into a phosphorus pentoxide film coating two platinum electrodes inside the sensor chamber.
Direct current voltage applied across these electrodes electrolyzes the absorbed moisture continuously into hydrogen and oxygen gases. Integrating the resulting electrolytic current over time yields the absolute mass of water entering the measurement volume without requiring external calibration standards.
Moisture Kinetics
A precision moisture analyzer governs the dryness threshold of hygroscopic engineering resins during high temperature hopper feeding before the melt reaches the injection barrel. Improper drying parameters lead directly to polymer chain scission and molecular weight degradation during the residence time in the plasticating screw. Excess moisture produces surface splay marks, silver streaks, and structural voiding in the moulded part.
A resin supplier datasheet states a target moisture content below zero point zero two percent for polyethylene terephthalate feedstocks. Moulders struggle to hold that exact limit across a production run because ambient relative humidity shifts inside the production hall.
Electrode Degradation
Continuous operation of the sensor plate subjects the phosphoric acid film to chemical saturation and gradual mechanical erosion from carrier gas particulate contamination. Contaminated gas streams coat the platinum winding and suppress the electrolysis reaction rate, causing falsely low moisture readings on the digital controller. Technicians regenerate fouled sensor coils by applying a high voltage cleaning current or by recoating the substrate with fresh electrolyte solution.
Virgin material processing requires stable baseline currents during steady state runs, whereas high regrind ratios introduce volatiles that coat the sensor prematurely and distort the integration curve.
Data Variance
Laboratory instrumentation provides certified moisture values under strict ambient control, which diverges from the fluctuating conditions observed beside a running injection moulding press. A material specification sheet derived from a benchtop tester reports a single static moisture percentage for a given lot of raw material. Process technicians running production must account for transient thermal gradients across the drying desiccant bed and minor fluctuations in purge gas flow rates.
Divergence between static laboratory values and dynamic shop floor measurements results in unverified part specifications and premature component failure under mechanical load.
