Meaning
A phenolic antioxidant prevents the thermo-oxidative degradation of plastics during melt processing and long term storage. Use of butylated hydroxytoluene protects polymer chains from radical-induced breakdown when exposed to heat and oxygen. It is commonly found in polyethylene and polypropylene to maintain mechanical strength and prevent discolouration during injection moulding.
Thermal Stabilisation
Polymers experience intense shear and heat inside an extruder barrel. The addition of butylated hydroxytoluene terminates the chain reactions that lead to molecular weight reduction. This preservation ensures the resin maintains its original viscosity and flow characteristics.
Process Residue
Small amounts of the additive can migrate to the surface of a finished part. Because butylated hydroxytoluene is volatile, it may evaporate during high temperature cycles or leave a faint odour in sensitive packaging applications. Monitoring these levels ensures compliance with food contact regulations and maintains the sensory profile of the product.
Degradation Control
Unprotected resins quickly turn yellow or become brittle when recycled. Including butylated hydroxytoluene in the initial formulation extends the life of the material and allows for the inclusion of regrind in production runs. Effective stabilisation reduces scrap rates and lowers the overall cost of polymer sourcing.
The additive remains one of the most cost effective solutions for protecting polyolefins during the high heat cycles of modern manufacturing.
