Meaning
Analytical titration determines the quantity of acidic components present in a polymer resin by measuring the mass of potassium hydroxide required to neutralize one gram of the material. A low acid number is required for virgin polyester and polyamide resins to prevent hydrolytic degradation during subsequent high-temperature melt processing. When moisture is present during extrusion, these terminal acid groups accelerate chain scission, which reduces the molecular weight and mechanical strength of the moulded part.
Chemical Quantification
Laboratory measurement of the acid number involves dissolving the polymer in a suitable solvent mixture such as toluene and ethanol before titrating against a standardized potassium hydroxide solution. This procedure isolates the concentration of free acids that could otherwise drive transesterification or catalytic breakdown during extrusion. If the polymer is a polyamide, the concentration of terminal carboxyl groups directly influences both the dyeability of the finished fiber and the moisture absorption rate of the molded component.
The presence of residual catalysts from the polymerization stage can also influence the titration endpoint, which requires the use of non-aqueous techniques to ensure accurate baseline measurements for demanding automotive and aerospace applications.
Degradation Consequence
Molding recycled plastics often exposes the limits of virgin polymer specifications since regrind material carries a higher density of acidic endgroups resulting from thermal oxidation. A high acid number corresponds to reduced thermal stability in the melt phase, which leads to drooling at the nozzle and flashing in the mold cavities. Processing oxidized material with an elevated acid number increases the risk of brittle failures in the finished thin-walled parts due to the shorter polymer chains generated during processing.
Process Control
Incoming resin inspection relies on comparing datasheet parameters with laboratory titrations to prevent process drift. If the acid number exceeds the specified limit, the molder must adjust the drying cycle to mitigate degradation.
