Meaning
Maintenance process involving the removal of mineral deposits and oxidation from the internal cooling passages of an injection mould. Hard water used in cooling towers often leaves calcium and magnesium buildup that acts as an insulating layer, which reduces the heat transfer efficiency of the tool. Systematic water channel descaling restores the thermal performance of the mould to its original design specification.
Flow Restoration
Blockages in the cooling lines increase the backpressure on the pump and reduce the volume of water reaching the cavity areas. By using a circulating pump and a mild acidic solution, water channel descaling dissolves the scale without damaging the steel or the rubber seals. Measuring the flow rate before and after the procedure provides a quantitative proof of the improvement.
Cycle Efficiency
Cooling accounts for the largest portion of the injection moulding cycle, and any reduction in heat transfer directly increases the time required for the part to solidify. Regular water channel descaling prevents the gradual creep in cycle time that occurs as the tool ages and the channels become fouled. Maintaining a consistent temperature across the mould face also improves the dimensional stability of the plastic parts.
Pump Health
Scale particles that break loose from the channels can damage the seals and impellers of the temperature control unit.
