Meaning
Chemical substance that releases protective vapors to prevent the oxidation of metal surfaces in an enclosed environment. In the context of polymer packaging, these inhibitors are often integrated into films or bags to protect metal parts during shipping and storage. The molecules of the vapor corrosion inhibitor migrate from the plastic and form a thin layer on the metal that blocks moisture and oxygen.
Active Protection
Saturation of the air inside the package occurs shortly after the container is sealed. This layer of vapor corrosion inhibitor is self-healing, meaning that if the package is briefly opened, the protective atmosphere will quickly reform once it is closed again. This makes it a solution for components that must be inspected during a long transit.
Material Integration
Masterbatches are used to blend the active chemicals into the resin during the film blowing process. The concentration of the vapor corrosion inhibitor must be carefully controlled to ensure it provides long-term protection without affecting the strength or clarity of the film. High-quality films can provide protection for up to two years under normal warehouse conditions.
Clean Application
Metal parts remain dry and ready for use immediately upon removal from the packaging. Unlike traditional greases or oils, the vapor corrosion inhibitor leaves no residue that needs to be cleaned before the part is painted or assembled. This reduction in labor and chemical waste makes treated plastics a cost-effective choice for international automotive and machinery exports.
