Meaning
Precision shim or machined ring used to apply a defined compressive force to a cavity pressure sensor during assembly belongs to this category of hardware. A pretensioning spacer ensures that the piezoelectric sensor remains under a continuous pre-load, which is necessary to capture both tensile and compressive forces accurately. When this component is sized incorrectly, the sensor’s signal can drift or drop out completely during the cooling phase.
This part is a mechanical accessory installed within the sensor pocket, distinguishing it from the active tooling plates.
Sensor Preloading
Piezoelectric elements inside cavity sensors require a minimum baseline pressure to generate linear electrical responses. Installing a pretensioning spacer creates this required offset by slightly compressing the sensor body when the retaining bolt is tightened. This pre-load allows the sensor to measure the decrease in pressure as the plastic shrinks away from the cavity wall.
Without this spacer, the initial contact of the polymer melt front causes a non-linear signal spike that distorts the monitoring curve.
Force Distribution
Distributing the clamping force evenly across the sensor housing prevents damage to the delicate internal quartz crystals. The pretensioning spacer must be manufactured from hardened tool steel to resist deformation under the extreme pressures generated during injection moulding. If the spacer is too soft, it will deform over time, leading to a loss of pre-load and requiring frequent recalibration.
This mechanical stability is necessary for ensuring that the sensor’s output remains consistent across millions of cycles, ensuring the tool is not pulled for repair prematurely.
Tooling Longevity
Using these calibrated rings prevents the sensor from experiencing high, localized impact forces when the mould clamps shut. The pretensioning spacer acts as a mechanical buffer that stabilizes the sensor within its bore. This stabilization prevents micro-movements that would wear down the sensor pocket.
