Meaning
Fluid power devices convert compressed air into mechanical motion to operate moving parts within automated production systems. In polymer processing, a pneumatic actuator is commonly used to open and close diverter gates and valve gates. This component offers rapid response times and clean operation, making it ideal for cleanroom environments where hydraulic fluids cannot be tolerated.
Its force is directly proportional to the supplied air pressure and the surface area of the internal piston.
Pressure Conversion
Compressed air enters the chamber on one side of the piston, forcing it to slide along the cylinder bore. This linear movement is transferred through a rod to the external mechanism that needs to be moved. Springs or double acting air lines return the piston to its start position once the pressure is released.
Valve Operation
Precise control of the airflow is handled by solenoid valves triggered by the machine controller. This setup allows for sub second response times, which are necessary to coordinate the actuator with the high speed cycle of an injection moulding machine. Proper lubrication and dry air are required to prevent wear on the internal seals.
System Reliability
Simple mechanical designs ensure that these devices have a long service life with minimal maintenance. They provide a cost effective and reliable method for automating repetitive tasks across the production line.
