Meaning
Resistance to deflection under the compressive load of the injection machine prevents the internal core and cavity components from shifting during high-pressure cycles. High mold base backplate stiffness ensures that the force from the machine platens is distributed evenly across the entire tool face. If the plate is too thin or made from soft material, it can bow under the pressure of the melt.
Deflection Control
Modern tool designs use Finite Element Analysis to predict how the plates will react to clamping forces. Sufficient mold base backplate stiffness prevents the centre of the tool from sagging, which would otherwise lead to uneven wall thicknesses in the part.
Structural Integrity
The backplate must support the weight of the mould and the dynamic forces of the ejection system. Static loads from the platens are also constant. These forces combined can cause metal fatigue over time.
Precision Alignment
Maintaining a flat profile is essential for the alignment of leader pins and bushings. When the backplate flexes, it puts side loads on these alignment features, causing accelerated wear or galling. High mold base backplate stiffness preserves the geometric relationship between the two halves of the tool.
Maintaining structural rigidity under load prevents premature failure of the alignment components.
