Meaning
Mechanical fracture during thermoplastic processing reduces the aspect ratio of reinforcement additives within a polymer matrix. Glass fiber degradation occurs when shear forces generated by screws and injection nozzles exceed the tensile strength of individual filaments. This length reduction limits the mechanical reinforcement potential of the composite, causing parts to exhibit lower stiffness and impact resistance than the raw material datasheet suggests.
Material Shear
High viscosity resins demand elevated processing speeds that increase the frequency of fiber breakage. Moulders observe this phenomenon most frequently at the feed throat or through small gate geometries where flow velocity reaches maximum levels. Each pass through a plasticizing unit cuts the average fiber length closer to a critical threshold where interfacial bonding becomes ineffective.
Reducing residence time or modifying screw geometry helps stabilize the fiber length distribution across a production run.
Defect Analysis
Dimensional instability and anisotropic shrinkage remain common symptoms of unintended filament attrition in structural components. Parts prone to warping often contain zones where the internal structure lacks sufficient reinforcement due to excessive fiber length loss. Regrind usage further exacerbates this issue because filaments endure repeated exposure to high shear environments during every remelt cycle.
Virgin resin pellets contain long fibers designed to provide structural performance whereas regrind mixtures force a compromise in final physical properties.
Performance Constraint
Ultimate tensile strength depends heavily on the maintenance of fiber length throughout the manufacturing cycle. Engineers calculate load carrying capacity based on the assumption that reinforcing agents retain their geometry after molding. Variations in pressure or screw rpm alter the extent of this physical breakdown during mass production.
Short fibers provide less stress transfer between the resin and the reinforcement, resulting in a measurable decline in fatigue life for demanding industrial applications.
