Meaning
Coulometric analytical vessel that does not use a glass diaphragm to isolate the cathode and anode chambers. Moisture determination in polymer labs often utilizes a fritless cell to simplify maintenance and eliminate capillary cleaning issues. This design allows the electrical current to generate iodine using a single, uniform reagent mixture throughout the entire cell volume.
Chemical Efficiency
Eliminating the diaphragm prevents the accumulation of polymer residues and titration by-products in the porous glass. In a fritless cell, the electrochemical reaction occurs on the surface of the electrodes without the risk of physical clogging. This open design reduces the stabilization time required before starting a moisture analysis run.
The result is a faster testing turnaround when checking resin pellets before injection moulding.
Maintenance Mitigation
Traditional cell diaphragms are notorious for trapping moisture and causing high background drift rates. Replacing this old design with a single-chamber vessel makes cleaning the analyzer much simpler and faster. No special solvent washes are needed to clear blocked pores in the cell wall.
This reduction in labor keeps the analytical equipment running during busy high-volume production schedules.
Operational Continuity
Faster titration cycles allow moulders to verify dry resin status with minimal downtime. This design choice decreases instrument maintenance costs and ensures continuous quality control on the factory floor.
