Meaning
Coextruded layers within a barrier structure prevent the permeation of oxygen and other gases into food products. Ethylene vinyl alcohol is a copolymer prized for its gas barrier performance when dry. This resin is typically positioned in the center of a five or seven layer film.
Barrier Performance
Oxygen transmission rates drop significantly as the vinyl alcohol content of the copolymer increases. High ethylene content improves the processability and reduces the effectiveness of the barrier. Balanced formulations protect oxygen sensitive contents like coffee or processed meats from oxidative spoilage.
Moisture Sensitivity
Water molecules plasticize the polymer and increase the gas permeability of the layer. Barrier properties degrade when the material is exposed to high humidity environments. Designers protect the core with thick layers of polyethylene or polypropylene to block water vapor.
Processing Requirement
Extrusion temperatures must be carefully controlled to prevent thermal degradation and the formation of gels. Residence time in the barrel is kept short to avoid the crosslinking of the polymer chains. Degraded material creates visual defects and weakens the physical integrity of the final part.
Die design should avoid dead zones where the resin could stagnate and char. Purging the system with a stable polyolefin during shutdowns prevents the buildup of carbonized deposits on the screw.
