Meaning
Ultraviolet curing speeds and high image quality are achieved by using inks that solidify instantly when exposed to UV light. Uv flexographic ink is widely used for labels and flexible packaging due to its low volatile organic compound emissions. This medium is applied to the substrate using a flexible relief plate.
Curing Process
Photoinitiators in the ink absorb energy from a UV lamp to start a rapid crosslinking reaction. The liquid uv flexographic ink transforms into a solid film in less than a second on the press. This speed allows for immediate downstream processing like die cutting or winding without the risk of set-off.
Adhesion Quality
Formulations are tailored to bond with low energy surfaces like polyethylene and polypropylene through the use of specific resins. Adhesion of uv flexographic ink is verified using standardized tape tests and rub resistance checks. Poor surface tension on the film leads to ink reticulation and weak bonding.
Safety Consideration
Low migration versions of these inks are required for food contact applications to prevent chemicals from tainting the product. Moulders must ensure the lamp intensity is sufficient to achieve a full cure across the entire width of the web. Uncured uv flexographic ink contains monomers that can penetrate the packaging and cause health risks or off-odors.
