Surface Analysis

The process works by pressing a plastic sample against a high refractive index crystal such as zinc selenide or diamond. When an infrared beam passes through the crystal, it creates an evanescent wave that penetrates the specimen. This wave yields absorption data that translates into a chemical spectrum.

Moulders can use atr-ftir spectroscopy to identify changes in surface crystallinity.

Contamination Control

Manufacturing facilities employ this technology to identify foreign substances that cause aesthetic or structural defects on the surface of finished components. If a lubricant or a release agent migrates to the part surface, it can prevent subsequent painting or bonding steps. Running a surface scan reveals the exact molecular structure of the contaminant, allowing process engineers to modify the moulding parameter or trace the source of the residue.

Material Verification

Procuring virgin or recycled resins requires strict incoming inspection to ensure consistency and prevent processing issues. Comparing the spectrum of the delivered material against a reference database ensures that the batch contains the correct polymer grade and has not been contaminated by other resins during transit. This step helps moulders avoid running incompatible material mixes that cause delamination, brittle failures, and high scrap rates.

Since recycled streams often contain mixed plastics, this rapid testing method helps buyers verify the purity of post-consumer lots prior to compounding.
