Meaning
Standard testing of flexible barriers relies on a standardized method that measures the strength of seal joints. This evaluation technique, known as astm f88 seal testing, determines the maximum force required to separate a test strip containing the seal.
Holding Force
Evaluation of this property ensures that the packaging maintains its integrity during transport and handling. The test can be executed using techniques such as supported and unsupported angles, which provide varying levels of bending stress on the film. Thus, astm f88 seal testing establishes a baseline for comparing different sealing settings on the production line.
Specimen Preparation
Proper cut and alignment of the test strip are necessary to avoid edge tear during the pull. Each strip is clamped in the grips of a tensile tester and pulled at a constant rate of two hundred to three hundred millimetres per minute. A mismatch in the pulling speed or misalignment of the tail can lead to inaccurate data that does not represent the true strength of the seam.
Performance Limit
Because this is a laboratory test conducted on cut strips, it yields a material property measurement rather than the dynamic performance of a package. If the seal fails too easily, the run may experience failures under vacuum. Conversely, too high a value can make the package impossible for an end user to open.
