Meaning
Hot runner systems in injection moulding use a mechanical shut-off mechanism to control melt flow into each cavity. This mechanism is a valve gate, which utilizes a movable pin or needle that physical blocks the gate orifice at the end of the filling cycle. It ensures a clean part surface by eliminating gate vestige.
Mechanical Operation
Pneumatic or hydraulic actuators drive the pin forward to seal the gate orifice before the cooling phase begins. This physical closure prevents melt from drooling into the cavity or backflowing into the runner during the packing stroke. Controlling the timing of each pin allows for sequential filling of large, complex parts.
This method helps manage weld line positions and reduces clamp force requirements.
Visual Quality
By eliminating the gate vestige, this system produces a flat and cosmetically appealing gate mark on the finished part. This is particularly valuable for medical devices, consumer electronics, and automotive interiors where surface finish is critical. It also eliminates the need for manual gate trimming after the part is ejected.
High-volume operations benefit from reduced labor and scrap costs.
System Maintenance
Designing and maintaining these complex hot runner assemblies requires tight tolerances and regular inspection. Abrasive resins and regrind material can wear the pin and the nozzle tip, leading to leakage or poor gate closure. If the pin is misaligned, it can scrape the mould steel or fail to seal completely, causing part defects.
Standard cleaning schedules and using high-wear materials like carbide for the pins help extend the service life of the valve gate. This proactive care lowers overall production costs.
