Meaning
Production support tool provides the stable base and alignment necessary to join thermoplastic components using high frequency vibrations. An ultrasonic welding fixture absorbs the static force and prevents the lower part from moving during the welding cycle. The design must match the external geometry of the workpiece exactly to ensure even energy distribution.
Energy Transfer
Rigid contact between the fixture and the part is necessary to direct the ultrasonic waves to the joint interface. If the ultrasonic welding fixture is too soft or poorly fitted, the energy dissipates into the surrounding air or the fixture itself. This loss results in weak bonds and long cycle times.
Materials like aluminum or stainless steel are preferred for the nest because they resist the heat and vibration.
Part Support
Damage to the aesthetic surfaces of the moulding is prevented by using urethane coatings or high precision machining on the contact points. Because the ultrasonic welding fixture must withstand downward pressure, the support structure must be robust. Contoured nests hold the parts in the correct orientation for the horn to make contact.
This alignment is critical for achieving a hermetic seal or a specific pull strength. Accurate nesting also reduces the noise generated by the process. The fixture often includes sensors to confirm that the parts are present before the cycle begins.
Weld Quality
Consistency across thousands of parts depends on the repeatability of the nest. A well designed ultrasonic welding fixture minimizes the variation in joint strength. Industrial assembly lines rely on these tools for high speed production.
