Meaning
Contractual approval protocols confirm that a production forming tool satisfies all geometric, mechanical, cycle-time and safety criteria required for full commercial manufacturing handover. In injection moulding and polymer processing, tooling signoff formalizes the commercial acceptance of the mould from the toolmaker by the component buyer or production facility. This signoff concludes the tooling development phase, validating that the steel construction, hot runner systems, cooling layouts and multi-cavity dimensional yields match procurement specifications.
The protocol ceases to apply once unauthorized mechanical alterations occur or when maintenance schedules are breached after handover.
Handover Verification
Documentation packages submitted for final approval must contain steel material certificates, hardening reports, cooling channel flow tests and comprehensive mould maintenance manuals. Before granting tooling signoff, toolroom engineers verify that moving slides, lifters, guided ejection systems and hydraulic interlocks operate cleanly without galling or excessive wear. Surface finish requirements, including specific spark-erosion textures or high-gloss optical polishing, undergo physical gloss-meter and roughness gauge inspections.
Electrical connections for hot runner zones, thermocouple wirings and cycle-counting hardware are confirmed against plant standards. Incomplete documentation stalls commercial transfer and halts progress payments.
Production Demonstration
Final tool acceptance requires an uninterrupted manufacturing run under target production conditions at scheduled cycle times. During the tooling signoff trial, the mould must produce consecutive parts that satisfy dimensional tolerance limits without requiring intervention from technical support staff. Key performance indicators encompass shot-to-shot consistency, scrap rate percentages, cavity pressure stability and automatic part ejection without robot hang-ups.
Processing parameters such as injection velocity, barrel temperatures, pack pressure levels and cooling water volumes are documented on the official master setup sheet. The accepted cycle time establishes the baseline piece-price calculation for ongoing commercial supply.
Commercial Allocation
Contractual agreements tie tooling milestone payments directly to successful signoff completion. If critical part dimensions fall outside specified tolerances during the tooling signoff run, the financial liability for steel modifications, cavity re-machining or additional texturing remains with the toolmaker. Use of abrasive or corrosive plastics, such as glass-reinforced or flame-retardant polyamides, requires confirmation that specified cavity coatings like titanium nitride or chrome plating were applied correctly.
Once the signoff document is signed by both engineering and procurement managers, legal ownership transfers, and commercial production begins. Subsequent dimensional changes demand formal engineering change orders.
