Meaning
Unbalanced temperature distribution across mold steel or melt channels disrupts uniform polymer cooling and fluid flow. Observing thermal profile asymmetry indicates non-uniform heat zones caused by misaligned heater bands, clogged cooling channels or asymmetric mold block geometry. The metric governs thermal uniformity within injection manifolds, hot runner drops and cavity impressions.
Scope boundaries end where external ambient convection takes over from internal tool heat conduction.
Rheological Imbalance
Viscosity varies sharply with temperature, causing molten polymer to flow faster through hotter regions of a distribution manifold. Experiencing thermal profile asymmetry creates non-uniform volumetric filling rates across symmetrical mold cavities or within a single broad gate. Higher temperatures thin the polymer melt locally, increasing local shear rates and inducing structural flow imbalances.
These flow variations force the mold to pack unevenly, causing local density differences and inconsistent volumetric shrinkage.
Part Distortion
Differential cooling rates across opposite surfaces of a molded component generate severe internal residual stresses. Widespread thermal profile asymmetry induces bowing, twisting and post-ejection warpage as the component normalizes to room temperature. Hotter cavity regions cool slower, causing higher localized volumetric shrinkage that pulls the cooling part toward the warmer mold face.
Non-uniform mold cooling also extends cycle times, as the entire mold must wait for the hottest zone to drop below the heat deflection temperature before ejection.
Diagnostic Methods
Infrared thermography cameras and multi-point thermocouple arrays detect temperature gradients across manifold blocks and mold cavity surfaces. Resolving thermal profile asymmetry restores balanced filling profiles across multi-cavity tooling systems.
