Meaning
The mathematical relationship between the surface area of a moulded part and the volume of liquid or food it contains is surface volume ratio. In migration modeling, this parameter dictates the concentration of leached substances that can accumulate in the contact medium.
Migration Kinetics
When a polymer part is in contact with a liquid, the amount of migrating substance is proportional to the contact surface area. A higher surface volume ratio means that for a given amount of polymer, there is a smaller volume of liquid to dilute the migrants. This concentration effect is especially pronounced in small-volume containers, where even low levels of polymer extractables can result in high concentrations in the liquid.
Packaging Design
Designers must consider this geometric factor when selecting resin formulations for different packaging formats. For small containers, resins with lower additive migration rates must be sourced because the surface volume ratio increases as container size decreases. In contrast, large-volume drums have a low ratio, which allows more flexibility in material selection without risking non-compliance.
Compliance Testing
Regulatory bodies establish standard ratios for laboratory migration testing, typically assuming a ratio of six square decimeters per kilogram of food. When a moulder tests a newly sourced resin, the experimental results must be scaled using the actual surface volume ratio of the final product. This calculation ensures that safety assessments are relevant to the real-world application of the moulded part.
