Meaning
Interfacial thermodynamic properties measure the excess energy present at the boundary of a solid material compared to its bulk phase. In polymer science, surface energy determines how easily a plastic part can be wetted by liquids, adhesives, or inks. It is a critical material specification for polyolefins like polyethylene and polypropylene, which naturally have low values.
A low value results in poor adhesion, meaning that paints or inks will bead up and peel off the molded surface.
Material Characterization
Contact angle goniometry is the standard method used to measure this property. By depositing droplets of different liquids on the polymer, the surface energy is calculated from the resulting contact angles using theories like the Owens-Wendt method. This evaluation helps distinguish between virgin and regrind resins, as surface contaminants in recycled plastic can alter these values.
The datasheet value for a raw material provides a baseline, but the actual value on a molded part is influenced by processing parameters such as mold temperature and the use of release agents. Moulders must measure these values immediately after molding and before any secondary bonding steps to ensure consistent results.
Treatment Process
Corona, plasma, or flame treatments are used to raise this property on molded parts. These surface treatment processes introduce polar functional groups like hydroxyl or carboxyl groups onto the polymer surface. This oxidation increases the surface energy of the treated area, allowing adhesives or printing inks to wet the surface and form strong bonds.
If the treatment is too weak, the adhesive will fail, but if it is too intense, it can damage the polymer surface and cause cosmetic defects.
Adhesion Consequence
Quality control in downstream assembly steps relies on stable surface properties. When the surface energy of a molded component drifts, it can lead to adhesive failure during part bonding. In automotive or medical assembly, this drift can result in product failures or high reject rates.
Consistent monitoring ensures that treatment levels remain within specifications across the entire production run, minimizing cost.
