Meaning
Auxiliary holding devices and nesting structures support molded plastic parts during secondary operations like cooling, trimming or assembly. The use of secondary fixtures prevents the part from warping or deforming as it continues to cool outside the injection mould. These tools are essential for maintaining the dimensional accuracy of complex, thin walled parts.
Fixture Design
Built to match the exact CAD geometry of the molded component, these fixtures must hold the part securely without scratching or marking the cosmetic surfaces. Designers use secondary fixtures to lock critical dimensions in place while the polymer completes its shrinkage phase. This design ensures that subsequent assembly steps can be performed with high precision.
Process Control
Pneumatic clamps and sensor switches are often integrated into the nest to ensure the part is positioned correctly before any operation begins. For example, if a secondary fixture is used for gate trimming or heat staking, the machine will not cycle until the sensors confirm that the part is fully seated. This prevents misaligned operations and reduces assembly scrap.
Part Quality
Consistent part quality is achieved because the fixture removes human variability from the post moulding workflow. By holding the part in a rigid, defined state during trimming or ultrasonic welding, secondary fixtures ensure that every component is finished to the same standard. This consistency is particularly critical for automotive and medical parts where assembly tolerances are very tight, and where any post moulding warpage would otherwise make it impossible to assemble the final product without forcing the components together and risking stress cracking over time.
