Meaning
Thermal and molecular coalescence of opposing molten parison walls under mould clamping pressure forms a structural polymer joint along the container parting line. Integrity of seam weld fusion governs the hermetic sealing, drop impact resistance and structural durability of extrusion blow moulded hollow articles. The process occurs across pinch-off tooling zones at container bases, handle inserts and neck finishes, stopping where seamless injection stretch blow moulding or rotational moulding methods are utilized.
Coalescence Mechanics
Molten polymer chains undergo interfacial autohesion when clamped together above the resin melt temperature. Clamping tonnage drives opposing parison surfaces into intimate physical contact, forcing macromolecular chains to diffuse across the joint boundary and establish intermolecular entanglements. Tooling pinch lands maintain compressive stress while cutting excess flash, preventing void formation and maintaining joint continuity.
The joint must cool under pressure to freeze the entangled molecular structure into a coherent crystalline matrix identical to the parent container wall.
Defect Origins
Inadequate thermal energy, contaminated material or worn tooling geometry degrade parting line joint strength. Low melt temperatures or cold mould pinch steel prevent sufficient molecular mobility, resulting in cold welds characterized by sharp interfacial notches that fail catastrophically under tensile stress. Excessive regrind content introduces oxidized polymer chains and particulate inclusions that disrupt continuous polymer matrix entanglement along the seam.
Tooling misalignment or worn pinch-off steel lands relieve critical clamping pressure, leaving micro-voids and thinned seams prone to stress cracking.
Joint Validation
Destructive testing protocols verify weld seam strength before approving high-volume production lots. Quality technicians perform standard container drop impact testing, hydrostatic burst testing and base squeeze evaluations to verify seam weld fusion integrity. Microscopic cross-sectional analysis inspects the pinch-off root radius, confirming proper weld depth and the absence of internal V-notch crack initiation points.
Process engineers optimize extruder temperature profiles and clamp closing speeds to ensure robust seam integrity across shifting ambient manufacturing conditions.
