Meaning
Precision transducers utilize the piezoelectric effect to convert mechanical force into electrical signals for monitoring internal mould conditions. Piezoelectric pressure sensors measure the rapid changes in cavity pressure during the injection and packing phases of the moulding cycle. These devices contain crystals that generate a charge when compressed by the molten resin.
This high-resolution data allows manufacturers to detect short shots, flashes and dimensional variations in real time.
Data Acquisition
High frequency response allows the sensor to capture subtle pressure fluctuations that occur in milliseconds. This sensitivity is necessary for identifying the exact moment the cavity is full and the packing phase begins. The resulting pressure curve serves as a digital fingerprint for every part produced.
Mechanical Installation
Flush-mounted designs ensure that the sensor face does not leave a mark on the surface of the plastic part. These sensors are often placed behind an ejector pin to measure the force transmitted through the pin to the transducer. This indirect method protects the sensitive crystal from direct contact with corrosive or abrasive resins.
Quality Assurance
Monitoring the peak pressure and the pressure integral provides a reliable method for automated part sorting. Parts that fall outside the established process window are automatically diverted to a reject bin. Consistent pressure readings indicate a stable process and reduce the need for manual inspection of every moulded component.
