Meaning
Precision motion devices utilizing the deformation of ceramic crystals under an electric field provide high-speed, sub-micron displacement in industrial machinery. A piezoelectric actuator is employed in advanced polymer injection moulding to control valve gates or dynamic core pins with extreme accuracy. It enables precise, micro-second responses that are impossible to achieve with standard hydraulic or pneumatic systems.
Functional Mechanism
Applying a voltage to the piezoceramic stack causes it to expand or contract instantly. In dynamic moulding systems, the piezoelectric actuator drives the flow control pin to regulate melt delivery into the cavity. The rapid action of the ceramic stack can block or open the melt channel within milliseconds.
This speed allows moulders to control the filling profile of complex multi-cavity moulds.
Injection Tooling
Integration into the mould plate requires careful thermal management to protect the ceramic elements from high temperatures. The piezoelectric actuator must be isolated from the heated manifold to prevent depolarization of the crystal stack. Cooling channels are machined into the actuator housing to maintain an operating temperature below eighty degrees Celsius.
This isolation prevents thermal drift and maintains the actuator’s displacement accuracy throughout long production runs.
Process Control
Closed-loop control systems use feedback from cavity pressure sensors to adjust the voltage sent to the crystal stack. By using a piezoelectric actuator, the controller adjusts the gate opening during the packing phase to compensate for resin viscosity fluctuations. This level of control prevents part weight variation.
