Meaning
Mathematical models describe the rate of crystallization and phase change in polyamide 46 under specific cooling conditions. Because of its highly symmetrical chain structure, pa46 kinetics are characterized by an extremely fast crystallization rate compared to standard nylons. This rapid solidification allows for fast cycle times but demands strict thermal control during injection moulding.
Crystallization Rate
The rapid phase change means that the polymer transition from melt to solid occurs within a narrow temperature window. If the mould temperature is too low, the resin solidifies prematurely, leading to incomplete mold filling or high internal stresses. Measuring pa46 kinetics allows tool designers to position heating lines strategically to keep the melt flowing until the cavity is filled.
Moulding Cycle
Moulders run the risk of creating brittle parts with low crystallinity if the cooling rate is not controlled. While virgin resin achieves optimum crystallinity quickly under recommended settings, regrind blends can exhibit altered pa46 kinetics due to the presence of nucleating impurities from previous thermal cycles. These impurities alter the solidification rate, which causes inconsistencies in part dimensions and mechanical properties.
Process Window
Narrow processing windows require high-speed injection and precise barrel temperatures. Small deviations in the melt temperature can cause either thermal degradation or freeze-off at the gate, which increases production downtime and scrap costs.
