Meaning
A precision measurement instrument evaluates the flatness and parallelism of the steel platens on an injection moulding machine. Utilizing a machine platen flatometer allows maintenance technicians to detect any micro-warpage or deflection on the clamping surfaces where the mould is mounted. This tool is essential for preventing non-parallel clamping forces that can damage the mould and cause flash on the finished parts.
Measurement Process
Technicians mount the instrument’s high-precision dial indicators or electronic sensors on a rigid beam that spans the platen surface. As the beam is moved across the platen, the sensors record any deviations from a perfectly flat plane, often with a resolution of a fraction of a thousandth of an inch. These measurements are taken at multiple points around the tie bars and the centre of the platen to create a complete map of the surface profile.
If the platen is found to be bowed due to years of high-clamping forces, it must be re-machined or replaced to restore proper mould alignment.
Defect Prevention
Uneven clamping force occurs across the mould face when a platen is warped, allowing the cavity halves to separate slightly during the high-pressure injection phase. This separation leads to plastic leaking out of the cavities, resulting in part flash and dimensional inconsistency. Regular flatometer checks help identify these issues before they cause high scrap rates.
Calibration Record
This instrument data provides a critical baseline for the machine’s maintenance history. This record helps tracking the wear rate of the platens over time and planning preventive maintenance. It ensures the machine remains within tolerance for demanding moulding jobs.
